How to Read a Carrier’s DOT Safety Rating (And Why It Matters)

When shipping freight, working with a safe and reliable carrier is the only way to ensure your cargo remains safe and secure. One of the key tools used to assess carrier reliability is the Department of Transportation (DOT) safety rating.

This public scorecard reflects a carrier’s compliance with federal safety standards, determined through an FMCSA audit. If you're a shipper, broker, or carrier, knowing how to read this rating—and what it means—can directly affect your contracts, insurance, and operational future.

How to Read a DOT Safety Rating

You can easily check a carrier’s safety rating through the FMCSA’s SAFER system. Here’s how:

  • Visit the SAFER Website, FMCSA's Safety and Fitness Electronic Records System.
  • Search for the Carrier, using the USDOT number (most accurate), MC number, or company name.
  • Check the Safety Rating at the bottom of the company snapshot.

DOT Safety Ratings include:

  • Satisfactory – Carrier meets all safety fitness standards, with strong safety management controls.
  • Conditional – Some safety concerns exist, but the carrier can still operate while improvements are required.
  • Unsatisfactory – Serious safety deficiencies exist. The carrier must cease operations in interstate commerce after 45–60 days.
  • Not Rated – Over 80% of carriers are unrated. This simply means they have not yet undergone an FMCSA compliance audit.

Note: The DOT rating differs from CSA (Compliance, Safety, Accountability) scores, which are real-time performance metrics used for risk monitoring and audit selection.

Why the DOT Safety Rating Matters

A carrier’s DOT safety rating can shape its future. Here’s how it affects different stakeholders:

For Shippers and Brokers:

  • Contract Eligibility: Many refuse to work with carriers that have a Conditional or Unsatisfactory rating.
  • Liability Protection reduces legal exposure in the event of an incident.

For Carriers:

  • Insurance Premiums, lower for Satisfactory carriers; higher or denied for others.
  • Operational Status: Unsatisfactory carriers can be legally shut down.
  • Reputation & Hiring, drivers prefer to work for safety-rated companies.
  • Regulatory Attention, more inspections and audits with lower ratings.
